Subnautica 2 Is Live — Everything in the Early Access Launch Build

Subnautica 2 launched into Early Access on May 14, 2026. Here is everything in the launch build: 5 leviathan species, 88 fauna, 7 confirmed biomes, the Tadpole submersible, 81 Biomods, and co-op for up to four players.

Subnautica 2 is out. After a legal battle that delayed the game by nearly a year, the most wishlisted game on Steam launched into Early Access on May 14, 2026 at $29.99 — available on PC (Steam and Epic), Xbox Series X|S, and through Xbox Game Pass. It sold over 2 million copies before the first 12 hours were up.

The Setting

You play a Pioneer shipped off-world aboard the colony vessel CICADA. The ship's AI — the Noetic Advisor — redirected the vessel mid-jump after receiving an unknown signal. The ship broke apart in the atmosphere of planet Zezura, an ocean world, and your lifepod hit the surface. You are now underwater, alone or with friends, on an alien planet with no rescue incoming.

Creatures

The launch build includes 88 distinct creatures — 41 fauna and 47 flora. There are 5 leviathan-class species: the Collector Leviathan (Sparse Plains, persistent pursuit), the Shiver Leviathan (Void, pack hunter, ~5,000m), the Great Jaw (stationary, uses trap wires and gastric acid), the Deepwing Brooder (passive, drifts in open water dropping eggs), and the World Tree (titan-class, dormant, at the far map edge).

Non-leviathan highlights include the Coral Crab — an ambush predator that hides under a living coral dome — and the Foureye, a passive creature that is literally two conjoined twins sharing one body.

Biomes

Seven biomes are confirmed in the launch build: Kelp Forest (resource-rich, low danger), Sparse Plains, Graveyard, Plateaus, Thermal Spires, Void (map boundary, Shiver Leviathan packs), and World Tree (titan organism at the map edge, requires crossing the Void). More biomes are confirmed for future updates during Early Access.

Vehicles

The Tadpole is the only vehicle at launch — a compact 1–2 player submersible built for scouting and mid-range exploration. It comes in two chassis configurations: Scout Ray (standard) and Haul Rig (extra cargo in solo). Crafting recipe: 10 Titanium, 4 Wiring Kit, 2 Glass, 2 Battery. A mech suit — the game's answer to the Prawn Suit — is confirmed for a future update when deep-pressure biomes go live.

Biomods System

The Biomods system replaces the fragment-and-blueprint upgrade chain from the original Subnautica entirely. Scanning biomes, fauna, and architecture earns Adaptation Points, which are spent in a Biomod research tree to unlock 81 bio-engineered abilities equipped directly to the Pioneer. It is a significant design shift — progression is tied to exploration and scanning, not just crafting.

Co-op and Other Systems

Drop-in co-op supports up to four players simultaneously — including real-time collaborative base construction. The sculptural base-building system (shown in Dev Vlog 6) is fully live, with tile-based rooms, customisable windows, and free placement of all decorative and functional pieces. Physical ocean currents push pioneers during open-water traversal, and sprinting is available on surface land.

What's Coming Next

Unknown Worlds has published a post-launch roadmap. The first update focuses on quality-of-life and Biomods usability improvements. The next major update will expand the world with new biomes, creatures, resources, tools, and a new vehicle, plus the next chapter of the story. Follow our news feed for ongoing Early Access coverage.
